We know, we know… it feels like just last week that Google had its last major update. But every time there’s a new one, it’s important to stay on top of what it means for your SEO strategy and beyond. If you want to get up to date on what the latest Google updates are, how they’ll affect you, and what questions your clients might be asking about them, we’ve got it covered.

Google released its latest broad core update on August 22nd, taking approximately two weeks to complete the rollout. This is the most significant update since April of this year with lots of movement in the SERPs. They followed it closely with a smaller Helpful Content update starting on September 14th, which subsequently finished on September 28th, and as with every update, there are winners and losers. Google advises that there are no specific fixes to address setbacks your site may have experienced with these updates.

Has Google’s update affected SERPs?

While Google continually makes minor adjustments to its algorithms, the broad core update caused considerable volatility in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). Some websites have seen a substantial increase in rankings, while others have experienced a significant drop. As SEOs, we understand the unpredictability of this journey, but conveying this to individuals unfamiliar with the nuances of SEO can be complex.

If your website has seen a boost in rankings, congratulations! Enjoy the success, but remember that the ultimate goal is sustained improvement. On the other hand, if your site has suffered, don't be disheartened. Algorithms change and being out of favour now doesn't mean your content won't regain prominence in the future.

How to resolve issues after Google’s update?

Here is what you can do in the aftermath of a Google update:

  • Use GA4 and Search Console to monitor progression and assess the impact on your traffic, your rankings, and any unusual user behaviour.
  • If you have pages that have been affected, make a note of them and recognise any patterns across your industry where possible.
  • Check your content and user experience is aligned with Google’s best practice and consider advice and information released after the update by official Google representatives.
  • Communicate any impact with stakeholders and decision-makers to highlight your awareness of the latest occurrences and any actions you are taking.

Remember that it may take some time for the effects of a significant Google update to stabilise. Patience and a proactive approach to SEO adjustments are essential in navigating the ever-evolving search landscape.
